The IEC 61508 standard, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission, presents a generic approach to the safety life cycle activities of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic systems, used to perform safety functions.

It is the “parent” standard of IEC 61511 for process industries, IEC 61513 for nuclear, IEC 63187 for defense, EN 50126/50128/50129 for railways and ISO 26262 for automotive.

This standard requires companies to ensure that the personnel in charge of functional safety have a sufficient level of competence and qualification.
